The ship is around 30 meters wide, but slopes. Let's try putting them in triple wide, which is about as much as you can hope for. See that window? Your standard TIE is about a meter longer than that window, and almost 3 times as tall. The hanger on that corvette was in an section attached to the side of the vette, and still took up a third of the ship. Where the concept originated is anyones guess. Most of the Star Wars games I've seen over the years like Dark Forces and the X-wing series have cutscenes showing Nebulon-B frigates with hangars. It is very possible that the ILM model is just a standard Nebulon-B and that there are other modified versions with hangars. _05.jpg It clearly has no hangar on the ILM model. You don't need a hangar like that when the cargo you will be accepting, in this case wounded men, can be easily transferred through the docking tube. I think the sources that say the medical frigate had this space converted into a med ward may have it perfectly right. However on a smaller vessel it would make sense to just shut the hangar door and turn the space into a protected repair bay or such.
A larger ship like an Impstar has plenty of room to move ships out of the main bay for service or storage. It is possible that the Nebulon B's in the movies had hangars that were covered by blast doors. A docking bay is a lot more versatile than the docking tube the Falcon used. I think it would make sense to be able to pick up small shuttles, escape pods, or stricken fighters even if they don't have the facilities to service them or keep much extra fuel. Still I think there is plenty of room in the forward part of the ship to have a docking bay.
The frigates are longer than real naval carriers but due to their unorthodox shape they might be less massive. I'd have to agree with others in this thread that it is entirely plausible that some Nebulon B frigates would have small hangars in them.
